Assynt is a place I’m very happy to keep going back to. Suilven, Canisp, Stac Pollaidh: even the drive gives you enough to think about before you’ve put your boots on.
There’s a lot of open ground between the mountains, which makes each one feel quite separate. You can spend a surprising amount of time looking at the same hill from slightly different places. Or at least I can.
It doesn’t all have to be a big hike.
If you want a day in the hills, there’s plenty to work towards. But you can also have a very good day around the lochs, the coast or the ruins at Ardvreck without committing yourself to a summit.
I’d choose a walk that suits your experience and the conditions, rather than picking the mountain with the most recognisable outline and working backwards from there.
Stay a little longer.
Lochinver makes a useful place to stop, and there’s plenty more to see along the coast. Clachtoll’s broch is another reason to leave the car and spend some time looking around.
The main thing is not to give yourself so little time that you’re already thinking about leaving as soon as you arrive. Assynt will happily fill whatever you give it.
