Hermitage Castle

January 23, 2023

Hermitage Castle, located in the Scottish Borders region of Scotland, has a rich history and is associated with several stories and legends.

One of the most well-known stories connected to the castle is that of Sir William Douglas, also known as "The Knight of Liddesdale." He was the keeper of the castle in the 14th century and was known for his ruthless tactics against the English. He was also said to have kept a pet lion in the castle, which he would unleash on his enemies.

Another legend associated with the castle is that of the "Black Douglas," James Douglas, who was a close friend and companion of Robert the Bruce. According to legend, James was betrayed and killed by the Earl of Ross while visiting the castle.

The castle is also said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman who was imprisoned there by her husband. The story goes that she died of starvation while being held captive and her ghost is said to still roam the castle to this day.

Additionally, Hermitage Castle is also connected to the story of the "Dark Lord of Hermitage," Sir Alexander Ramsay, who was known for his cruel behavior towards the local people, and was said to have kept a dungeon in the castle where he would torture and kill those who displeased him.

Overall, Hermitage Castle has a rich history and is associated with many stories and legends, many of them having to do with violence and cruelty.
